Frequently Asked Questions regarding Sunset at the Zoo:

  • What’s the attire?

    Attire for Sunset at the Zoo is summer chic.  What is summer chic?  For men – fun evening summer wear, coats optional.  For women – fun cocktail attire.  Animal prints and accessories optional!  No blue jeans or shorts please.  Comfortable shoes are highly recommended.

  • How far away is parking?

    Complimentary parking is available in the parking structure and large surface lot.  Valet parking is available in the circle drive in front of Main Admissions.  Cost for valet is $10. (Benefactor and Patron ticketholders receive complimentary valet.) 

  • Can I purchase tickets at the door?

    Yes!

    Is there a price difference?

    Yes, ticket prices are $25 more per ticket if purchased on the day of the event:

    • Patron – $350
    • Supporter – $200
  • Is the event postponed if it is raining?

    No.  Sunset at the Zoo is a rain-or-shine event.

  • Are the animals out and can we walk the whole Zoo?

    Enjoy exclusive access to many of the Detroit Zoo’s award-winning habitats at twilight. All habitats and buildings will close promptly at 8:45 p.m.  Please check the program on event night for additional details.

  • Will the train be running?

    The Tauber Family Railroad will be running for the VIP Reception, sponsored by ITC Holdings Corp., from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Benefactor and Patron ticketholders will be transported to the Zoo’s African Grasslands and will enjoy entertainment, light hors d’oeuvres and drinks before the gala opens to the public. The Tauber Family Railroad will not be running during Sunset at the Zoo. Complimentary tram rides are available for a brief tour of the Zoo, starting near the Carousel.  The last tram ride is at 8 p.m.

  • Can I rent a wheelchair/ECV?

    Yes, wheelchairs and ECVs are available for Sunset at the Zoo.  To reserve one in advance, please contact Julie Geisinger at  (248) 336-5735 or use the form below.


  • How do I claim my auction items?

    Auction items can be claimed at the end of the evening inside the Events Pavilion, located just east of the Ford Education Center.  If you are unable to stay until the end and won a prize, someone from the development staff will be in contact with you following the event, and arrangements can be made to pick it up at the Detroit Zoo.

  • Will cabs be available at the end of the night?

    Yes, cab service will be available in a designated location near the large surface lot. For Uber/Lyft riders, please follow signs for pick-up and drop-off location. Please ask a staff member or volunteer if you need assistance.
