Sunset at the Zoo “Penguin Palooza”
A record-breaking crowd of more than 2,500 “party animals” joined the Detroit Zoological Society and co-chairs Joseph Campanelli and Karen Cullen on June 10 for Sunset at the Zoo “Penguin Palooza,” the spectacular, creatively wild, 21-and-older annual fundraising gala. This year’s Sunset at the Zoo, presented by Strategic Staffing Solutions, celebrated the new Polk Penguin Conservation Center.
Guests enjoyed an exquisite strolling supper and dessert reception featuring more than 50 of metro Detroit’s best restaurants and distributors. Sunset offered incredible live entertainment from The Simone Vitale Band and Tom Butwin, dancing under the stars, plus over-the-top spectacles by Detroit Flyhouse that included fire breathing, acrobatics and mimes. Guests also had the chance to win “zoonique” prizes in the live and silent auctions, and try their luck with the ever-popular Sunset Keys.
The VIP Reception kicked off the evening’s festivities at the Polk Penguin Conservation Center. Later, guests strolled among the Detroit Zoo’s award-winning habitats at twilight and enjoyed a great party centered around the Rackham Fountain and Events Pavilion.
Sunset at the Zoo is more than a great party – it raises critical funds to support the Detroit Zoological Society and our mission of Celebrating and Saving Wildlife. This year’s event earned over $550,000 in net revenue, making it the most successful Sunset to date!
Thank you to all of the incredibly generous sponsors, restaurants, distributors and individuals who donated their time, talents and resources to make this year’s Sunset at the Zoo a success!
Mark your calendars and save the date for next year – Sunset at the Zoo will take place on Friday, June 16, 2017!
